Read and Understand the Pump Performance Curve

As mentioned before, many conditions need to be paid attention to when selecting pumps. After understanding the basic concepts, we will explain how to understand the "pump performance curve (H-Q curve)." The performance of each pump is different, and the most suitable pump must be selected based on the pump performance specifications and the operating conditions provided by the customer.

Pump performance curve (H-Q curve)

As shown in the performance curve, the horizontal axis is the flow CAPACITY (Q), the left side of the vertical axis is the head HEAD (H), and the right side of the vertical axis is the efficiency EFFICIENCY (%) and shaft power (shaft power).

The first gray straight dotted line at the top of the figure is the shaft work performance at the maximum diameter of the impeller, and the second gray straight dotted line is the shaft work performance at the maximum impeller diameter. The red POWER straight line provides customers with pump shaft power performance that meets operating conditions.
The first gray curved line at the bottom of the figure is the performance curve at the maximum diameter of the impeller, and the second gray curved line is the performance curve at the minimum diameter of the impeller. The red TDH curve is the performance curve of the pump that meets the operating conditions provided by the customer. It is what we get by adjusting the impeller size, which shows the relationship between flow and head. The green EFF curve is the operating efficiency of the pump.

The horizontal axis is based on the demand flow and is compared upward with the red curve to find the duty point. Compare the operating point to the left and right vertical axes to get the lift and efficiency; compare upward to the red straight line, from the intersection point (shaft power) to the right By comparing the vertical axis, you can know the shaft work under this operating condition.

The efficiency of the pump depends on the operating point, and changes in the operating point will also have a great impact on the on-site process, so the correct selection of the pump is very important.
