What's the Difference between Normal Motors, Inverter Duty Motors and Explosion-Proof Motors?

Motors, also known as motors, are an indispensable part of the automation industry and one of the most common electrical equipment in life. They are widely used in various electrical appliances, ranging from washing machines and electric fans in daily life to large industries. For water pumping, mechanical industry, fluid transportation and other purposes, motors are also indispensable when using pumps. Therefore, it is very important to understand and choose the appropriate motor. The following introduces the differences between general motors, variable frequency motors and explosion-proof motors.

General Motor

There are many types of motors, which can be divided into DC motors, AC motors, etc., according to the type of input power supply. DC motors can be further subdivided into Brushed DC Motors and Brushless DC motors. (Brushless DC Motor, BLDC Motor); AC motor includes induction motor (Induction Motor) and synchronous motor (Synchronous Motor). To put it simply, DC motors control the motor speed through voltage and are easy to control, but are not suitable for use in high-temperature and flammable operating environments. AC motors control the motor speed through the frequency of alternating current, so it is more difficult to control the speed than DC motors. However, it is more suitable for use in high temperature and flammable working environments.

Variable Frequency Motor

A frequency converter (variable frequency drive (VFD) /Inverter) is used to change the frequency of AC power, thereby changing and controlling the speed and torque of the AC motor. Therefore, "variable frequency drive" refers to the method of driving an AC motor. It can be started and adjusted frequently without maintaining full speed operation and maximum power. When the motor speed is reduced, the output horsepower will also be reduced, thereby achieving high efficiency and energy saving. The system control is also more stable than ordinary traditional motors.

Explosion-Proof Motor

Mainly used in operating environments where flammable substances exist, such as coal mining, natural gas industry, petrochemical industry and chemical industry. The explosion-proof hard shell can withstand the explosion pressure inside the motor, and can also isolate heat and combustible materials to avoid the risk of fire or explosion.
According to the explosion-proof form, it can be roughly divided into flameproof motors (code d), intrinsically safe motors (code i), increased safety motors (code e), positive pressure motors (code p), non-sparking motors type motor (code n), and dust explosion-proof motor, etc., each has its characteristics and functions according to different protection levels.

After a brief understanding of the differences between these motors, I believe it will be easier to choose the right motor for your needs.
